A few months ago, I decided that I wanted to take on a new challenge after the completion of my 30 before 30 project. Despite crossing off only a third of my list, I feel as though the project succeeded in pushing me to grow as a person over the past year. It challenged me to try new things and to change old habits.
A 40 before 40 project following the same guidelines, however, seemed impractical. How, out of hundreds of activities I’d like to attempt in my life, could I narrow down a list of forty specific things to attempt over the next ten years? Like my earlier project, the list would have been arbitrary. I didn’t want to put myself into a box, attempting to carry out a laundry list of things while potentially putting off other, more exciting, opportunities.
And then there were more vexing questions. What if I lost interest in any of the items in the next ten years? What if situations in my life were to change so drastically that some of the items become impossible? What if I’m no longer blogging ten years from now?
Ten years is a long time. When I turned twenty, I could never have guessed where I’d be in my life now. My beliefs, values, and understandings of the world have grown tenfold in the past ten years. I’ve made new friends and lost old ones. I’ve learned when to hold on to old friendships and when to let them move on. I’ve learned so much about myself, about love, and about the world around me. I can only imagine the next ten years will bring about as much change.
At the same time, there are a few things that haven’t changed. A set of core values that have always been important to me: a burning desire to travel the world, to experience new things, to meet new people, and to spend more time with the people I love. As I sat down to make a project list, I thought about these things. My challenge became clear almost instantly.
Rather than write a list of things I hope to do before my fortieth birthday, I’d let the list create itself, stemming from one goal: 40 new adventures in the next ten years.
I’ll update this page with each new experience, adding on to the list with links to blog posts detailing my adventures. I hope you’ll join me!
