Good evening! I’m interrupting my regularly scheduled Hawaii posts today to share a bit about what’s been going on behind-the-scenes, both on this blog and in my personal life. It’s been a while since I’ve done a personal update here.
So what’s going on with me? Since August, I’ve been working as a visual effects assistant editor on the upcoming show Supergirl. I don’t write much about my day job on the blog, primarily because I’m not allowed to talk about details of the projects I’m working on. But, being back on a regular job means I don’t have nearly as much time to write as I used to. As a result, I’ve felt my writing suffer over the past several weeks.
I struggled for a while with the idea of cutting back on my posting schedule. As it stands, I only post twice a week. This already seems like very little.
So I spent some time contemplating the future of my blog, and I realized a few things. First, I don’t think this blog will ever be a full-time thing. I love my day job too much to give it up. Second, I love writing in this space because it provides me an outlet to be creative and write about things that I’m passionate about outside of work. And third, struggling to stick to a rigid posting schedule while working full-time was killing my creativity and sense of expression. Was there any point in forcing myself to write so much if I wasn’t feeling good about it?
I decided to cut back to one post per week. I may still write two posts on weeks when I’m feeling a little more inspired. But I’m not going to post anything until I feel like it’s ready to post. I’d been sticking to this rigid schedule because all the “how to blog” posts told me I should. They told me that’s the way to get more readers. But I’m not going to increase my readership if I’m not writing anything that people want to read. And so, I’m going back to basics.
I’m also planning a few more changes, content-wise. As it stands, this blog has primarily focused on travel and restaurant reviews. I’m still planning to write about these topics, but what I’ve really become passionate about over the past several years is cooking. I’ve posted a few recipe posts in the past, but I want to share more. I’ve been hesitant about going this direction for a long time because I don’t create many of my own recipes, and I didn’t want to seem like I was ripping off other food bloggers. But, I think my experiences learning to cook — making mistakes and learning from them — could be really useful to some of you out there who, like me, never learned to cook growing up. Most of the food bloggers hide the blunders. But I’m planning to work through my mistakes and to share the results with you.
Finally, I’m working on a fresh new look for QGNC. This has been in the works for some time, as I’ve been unhappy with my current design basically since I first launched it earlier this year. Cutting back on posting should give me the extra time I need to finally get it off the ground. I’m hoping for it to be live by the end of the year.
So that’s where things stand. I had a few more Hawaii posts planned, but I’m going to scrap them because, frankly, I don’t have much more to say that I haven’t already said. Things might get a little quieter around here, but I think you’ll enjoy the content that I do post quite a bit more.
