L.A. Eats: The Griffin

It’s about time that I bring back my “L.A. Eats” series. This time, I’d like to share with you one of my favorite new spots: The Griffin.
The night I took this photo, some of the lights were out on the sign, so it only reads “The G,” but I assure you it’s called “The Griffin.” See that neon griffin sipping a cocktail? He’s classy.
The bar at The Griffin — complete with lots of beers on tap and friendly bartenders (not pictured).

The Griffin is located in Atwater Village on Los Feliz Blvd, across the street from the Tam O’Shanter, and down the road from Bigfoot Lodge and The Morrison (also excellent bars/restaurants, if you are prone to bar-hopping). I drove by this place for years before we finally decided to give it a try. My only regret is that we didn’t check this place out sooner.

You enter the bar through a torn red velvet curtain into a dark room reminiscent of an underground bar somewhere in Europe. It’s dark and cozy, with wood-burning fireplaces and decorative brick archways across the ceiling. It literally feels like you’ve transported into another world. There’s lots of old framed artwork and tapestries decorating the walls. Cozy booths are tucked away into corners, and an old-fashioned jukebox sits to one side.

I was already in love with this place just from the vibe, but then I tried the drinks & food. They have a small, but excellent menu of drink specials. My favorites are the Evan William’s Sour and the Sour Blueberry (made with moonshine!). The food is incredible, too, and not the type of food you would typically expect to find at a small bar. They have an extensive burger & sandwich list, as well as a number of other dinner specials, including tasty pot pies. Every day there is a new special up on the chalkboard at the bar as well.
And if you’re not into eating a whole meal, they have a great appetizer & small bites menu. The Oxtail Poutine is to die for.

On this particular evening, I ordered shrimp & grits and topped it off with a Moscow Mule in a tin cup. Regretfully, I inhaled my meal before remembering to take a photo, though I did snap this shot of my snazzy drink.

Be sure to check out The Griffin if you’re in the neighborhood; maybe I’ll see you there!
