Growing up in Davis, California, there was just one place my family went when we were craving pizza: Steve’s Pizza.
Though its name has changed throughout the years, the great food and cozy atmosphere remain the same. I have many memories of Steve’s Pizza; I attended birthday parties, visited with family friends, and nestled in the wooden booths with my besties filling up on cheesy bread.
A few weeks ago, when I visited Davis to remove the last things from my father’s house, I stopped by Steve’s for old time’s sake. I’m happy to say the place is as awesome as ever. My husband and I ordered the original cheesy breadsticks and a medium California Gold. The cheesy bread was just as delicious as I remembered. I dipped it in the warm marinara sauce and remembered all the good times I’d spent eating these in my childhood. The pizza was a new flavor for me but had all the familiar qualities I’d come to expect from Steve’s: chewy crust, gooey cheese, and delicious toppings.
I may not be returning to Davis anytime soon, but if I do, I’ll be comforted to know that Steve’s will always be there, just as I remember it.
