Two years ago, MessHall Kitchen in Los Feliz began serving $1 oysters on Tuesday nights. This announcement commenced two years of failed attempts to take part in this weekly event. Until now.
I was quite familiar with MessHall by the time they introduced their oyster special. The problem became figuring out when to attend. The nature of my work means my hours are inconsistent; not ideal when the popularity of both the restaurant and the event means reservations are required. After two years of yearning for cheap oysters, this spring finally presented an opportunity.
There was one surprise evident immediately; the restaurant added tacos to the night’s fare, making it an oyster and taco Tuesday! Considering my love of tacos, I consider this a positive change.
My husband and I began by ordering six oysters and two tacos. The tacos were small soft tacos, made with ground beef and a few traditional toppings (lettuce, tomatoes, cheese). Good, but nothing inspiring. The oysters, however, were fantastic. They arrived over ice with three sauces: horseradish, a vinegar sauce, and traditional cocktail sauce. After some experimentation, I found the spicy horseradish and vinegar sauce to be the best combination.
While we ordered a few more trays and spent much of our evening downing delicious oysters, we sampled other dishes. We shared a bowl of roasted Brussels sprouts and a dish of fried sweet potatoes (not fries, but rather mini sweet potatoes covered in sour cream). I have yet to find myself disappointed by a meal at MessHall, and this was no exception.
The cocktails were equally exceptional. The drink menu emphasizes traditional, 1920s style cocktails with a modern twist. My favorites include Penicillin, Pineapple Cake Vodka Soda, and Not Without My Bitters. They regularly add new cocktails to their repertoire as well. Recently, they’ve added “Mean Girls” themed drinks: That is So Fetch, You Go Glen Cocoa, and It’s October 3rd. On our oyster night, I imbibed in a That is So Fetch. It was delicious, but it is a much sweeter and heavier drink than most cocktails.
I would always recommend MessHall, but if you’re a fan of oysters, I encourage booking a table on Tuesday night to take advantage of this special deal. Who knows, maybe I’ll see you there!
