Patio Burgers & Beer is a tiny restaurant in the city of Eagle Rock on the eastern side of Los Angeles county. I first discovered the restaurant through my Instagram feed; several of my east side friends began posting pictures of the mouthwatering fare along with exuberant praise. Eagle Rock is practically my backyard, so I made a note to check it out as soon as possible.
Like many of my favorite places around the Los Angeles area, Patio Burgers & Beer is inconspicuous and easy to miss. Luckily they’ve painted this building a brilliant shade of blue to make it a bit easier to spot. Once you’ve found it, pull into the on-site parking lot, find a cozy spot on the roomy patio, and be ready to enjoy yourself.
We stopped by for a late lunch, and thus had our pick of patio seating. We picked a spot towards the back, away from the road. While the adjacent street wasn’t heavily trafficked, and therefore not too noisy, we preferred the added privacy the patio offered.
We each started by ordering a glass of cold draught beer. Their beer selection changes frequently, and as our waitress rattled off a seemingly endless list of choices, I realized I would barely be able to remember what I wanted to order let alone repeat them here. I chose a blonde ale. I don’t remember what Eric ordered. Both our selections were great, but beer is only one half of the equation at this establishment.
So let me get on to the burgers. The menu gets right to the point; you can choose a hamburger, cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, portobello burger, or fried chicken. You can add a few toppings to your burger, start your meal with a salad, or indulge in a side of fries. Eric went with the cheeseburger. I opted for the fried chicken. We added a side of hand-cut fries to share.
All the burgers here come with lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, and house sauce, which tasted similar to Thousand Island dressing. You can add bacon, fried egg, or avocado, but we both decided to have ours as they came. Eric was given a selection of cheese options to choose from for his burger and decided to go with blue cheese, a tasty decision.
My fried chicken was perfect. It was warm and crispy on the outside, with just the right amount of crunch, and the chicken on the inside was juicy and soft. It wasn’t overly greasy, which is usually what keeps me away from eating fried chicken, but I had an urge to try it this time and I’m so glad I did.
I adored the cozy setting and friendly staff at Patio Burgers & Beer. I’ll definitely be going back!
