It’s time for the second check-in of the Semi-Charmed Summer Book Challenge — that means we’re halfway through! I admittedly slowed down a bit this month; I haven’t been that into the books I’ve read recently, and they’ve been longer overall. I’m about halfway through Jane Eyre now, which I’m enjoying, so I hope things pick up in July. I’m leaving for a little vacation today and hoping I’ll get a lot more reading done on the flights!
For the curious, here’s what I read this past month:
The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith (also known as J.K. Rowling)
I had heard all kinds of good things about this book, but I just could not get in to it. The characters were incredibly uninteresting, and the solution to the crime seemed rather arbitrary. I finished this book early in the month, but it hasn’t really stuck with me. Too bad, because I was hoping I’d enjoy it. I gave it three stars on Goodreads, but it’s really more of a two and a half for me.
Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay
Oof. This one was a real slog for me. The first half of the book is a back-and-forth between the story of Sarah, a young Jewish girl whose family is arrested by French police during the Holocaust, and Julia Jarmond, a two-dimensional American journalist living and working in France who is assigned to write a story about the very arrest which changed Sarah’s life forever. The second half completely diverts from Sarah’s story, and follows Julia as she attempts to find out what happens to Sarah and deals with a bunch of life problems with obvious resolutions. I couldn’t stand Julia’s character, and as a result, it was very difficult to get through this book. Sarah’s story, however, I found fascinating, heartbreaking, and moving; I wish I could have read more about it without the superficial secondary narrator. Disappointing, because I’d been looking forward to reading this book for some time and it had come to me highly recommended.
What a lame month for reading! Hopefully my selections for next month are an improvement. For my full reading challenge list, check out my preliminary list. If you’d like to follow my progress on a day-to-day basis, add me as a friend on Goodreads. For more information on this reading challenge, read the full post on Semi-Charmed Kind of Life. And for those keeping score, I’m at 100 points out of 200.
