The Many Bountiful Brunches of Bon Vivant

The Many Bountiful Brunches of Bon Vivant

Good morning and happy Monday! Are you surprised to see yet another brunch-related post here?

More and more recently, I’ve developed a love of all things brunch. I love eating it, I love cooking it, I love trying new restaurants and new menu items, and I’ve recently learned that I adore writing about it. So here you have it, another brunch post — this one about a local favorite: Bon Vivant.

Eric and I discovered Bon Vivant this past summer during a desperate, mid-morning search for Bloody Mary’s. A quick Foursquare search led us to Bon Vivant in the heart of Atwater Village.

We fell instantly in love with this homey yet spacious café. The service is friendly and prompt, the atmosphere is casual and fun, and the food is spectacular. You can enjoy coffee in one of the big, squishy couches at the front (facing the open-air patio), indulge in a hearty breakfast at any of the many high-top tables, or even grab a cocktail or two at the bar.

I’ve been working my way through the brunch menu and have yet to encounter a dish I don’t love. There are a few I recommend: The breakfast burrito is an excellent choice — it’s extremely filling and flavorful. The biscuits and gravy are rich and creamy, and should be reserved for a day when you’re feeling particularly famished. If you’re interested in something a little sweeter, go for the berries and cream crepes. Most of the menu items come with a choice of potatoes, fruit, or salad — I always go with the potatoes.

Bon Vivant Waffles
Bon Vivant Breakfast Burrito
Bon Vivant Iced Latte
Bacon and Eggs with Potatoes     Bon Vivant Bloody Mary
Bon Vivant Berries and Cream Crepes
The Bloody Mary is an excellent choice to accompany any of their savory selections. They even sell their Bloody Mary mix so you can indulge at home. I’m also a huge fan of their iced lattes, which are smooth, creamy, and come in a big mason jar.

Bon Vivant has quickly become our weekend go-to brunch spot. But here’s the best thing about it: you can get brunch there every day of the week! Head on over and try it for yourself.

If you loved this post, you might also enjoy MessHall Kitchen’s weekend brunch and brunch at Crepeville in Davis, CA. This time last year, I was writing not about brunch, but about good times with my flatmates in London.

Tasting Los Angeles: A Summer Roundup

Tasting Los Angeles: A Summer Roundup

For this being a Los Angeles-based blog, I’ve written surprisingly little about Los Angeles these past few months. Instead, I’ve indulged you all in tales of my Hawaiian vacation, which has been a welcome escape from the day-to-day of being back at work. Yet life has continued since I was in Hawaii, and I’ve frequented dozens of local eateries that I’ve not yet shared with you — many of which are well worth a mention!

Today I’ve put together a round-up of the most notable restaurants I’ve visited over the last several months. Have a look, and maybe try some for yourself!

Berry Crepes from Bon Vivant

Brunch Spots

  • Bon Vivant Market & Cafe — A recent discovery, Bon Vivant has become a regular weekend brunch stop for Eric and me. We particularly appreciate the friendly staff, cozy atmosphere, and wide variety of breakfast fare. The best part? They serve brunch every single day until 4 PM! || Recommendations: Breakfast Burrito, Eggs Benedict with Hollandaise and Crab, and Fresh Mixed Berries, Sweet Butter & Crème Fraiche Crepe.
  • Lamill Coffee Boutique — Eric and I have visited this Silver Lake coffee shop off-and-on for several years. Their recent menu revamp is a vast improvement over their old breakfast fare. Lamill has an extreme hipster vibe and is a popular place for celebrity spotting (if you’re into that sort of thing). || Recommendations: Breakfast Sandwich with Bacon, and the Iced Salted Caramel Latte.
  • MessHall Kitchen — If you’ve delved into my archives, you’ve likely read about my love of MessHall Kitchen. I’ve written not one but two blog posts on the subject. I enjoy their weekend brunch for the tasty menu selections, the cozy outdoor patio, and their kick-ass Bloody Mary, the “Breakfast of Champions”. || Recommendations: MessHall Benedict, Pick 3 Omelette, and Breakfast of Champions.
  • The Village Bakery & Cafe — I’ve shared The Village Bakery on the blog in the past, and it remains one of my favorite brunch spots. They make their dishes with fresh, natural ingredients, and offer a friendly, down-to-earth ambiance. || Recommendations: Village Scramble, Thanksgiving on a Bun, and any of their homemade pastries.

Brunch at Bon Vivant

Lunch & Dinner

  • Din Tai Fung Dumpling House — Ever since this popular Taiwanese dumpling house opened at the Americana, we’ve visited frequently to get our fill of delicious soup dumplings. I discovered their Arcadia locations in 2012, and I’m overjoyed to now have them in my neighborhood. Plus, this location serves alcohol in the form of tasty cocktails! || Recommendations: Pork XiaoLongBao, Vegetarian Fried Noodles, and Shanghai Flame.
  • Dune — Eric and I have spent the past several weeks exploring nearby Atwater Village and their many restaurants. Dune is a recent discovery. This cozy spot serves up hearty Mediterranean-style fare and has tons of outdoor seating. || Recommendations: Organic Green Herb Falafel, Pasture Raised Lamb, and Rosemary Lemonade.
  • Hugo’s Tacos — Hugo’s is another that I’ve mentioned before; it’s a top choice for quick and healthy take-out. They offer a vast selection of Americanized Mexican fare with options for vegans, vegetarians, and carnivores alike. || Recommendations: Al Pastor Burrito Bowl, Torta Ahogada, and Horchata.
  • Jitlada Thai Restaurant — I learned about Jitlada through some friends of mine several years ago but hadn’t returned until recently. This modest Thai restaurant, nestled in the corner of a dingy strip mall, is known for it’s seemingly never-ending menu, containing a large number of incredibly spicy dishes. It’s also a favorite of Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons. || Recommendations: Crying Tiger Pork, Jungle Curry Lamb (it’s very spicy!), and Thai Iced Tea.
  • Kanpai Ramen — This tiny ramen joint opened up in Glendale a few years ago, but I avoided it for some time. Roughly a dozen restaurants had come and gone from the same crusty strip mall, and I assumed this one would be no different. It persevered, and I decided to finally give it a try. Now I’m disappointed I didn’t discover it sooner! || Recommendations: Spicy Tonkatsu Ramen with Marinated Pork Belly.
  • Link N Hops — Eric and I are huge fans of Wurstkuche, but making the trip downtown is a bit of a stretch for us these days. That’s why we were so excited to discover Link N Hops, a nearby sausage joint with a relaxed vibe and tasty cuisine. We order carry-out and enjoy dinner and a movie at home. || Recommendations: Smoked Portuguese Hawaiian, Chicken Habanero & Tequila, and Duck & Bacon with Jalapeno.
  • Neptune’s Net — Whenever we make it out to Malibu for a beach day, Neptune’s Net is a must-visit. This crusty seafood shack serves up the best fried fish and offers some of the most fascinating people-watching in the area. || Recommendations: Calamari and Shrimp Combo and Fish & Chips.
  • Pine & Crane — This trendy and popular Taiwanese eatery offers up an impressive variety of fresh-made dishes. I have yet to try something here that I didn’t like. || Recommendations: Wonton Noodle Soup, Zha Jiang Noodles, and Three Cup Jidori Chicken.
  • Poke N Roll — Poke N Roll is one that I wouldn’t necessarily recommend, but it seems to be popular with locals which is why I think it’s worth a mention. It’s like the Chipotle of sushi joints; you walk along the counter, following the steps to assemble a poke bowl of your choosing. The food is good. They seem to keep the fish well-chilled despite it sitting behind a counter. The restaurant is small and cramped, and I’ve had better sushi elsewhere. || Recommendations: Crab, Albacore, and Seaweed Salad.
  • Smoke City Market — It is practically impossible to find real BBQ in Los Angeles. If you weren’t raised in the south, you might be able to settle for the mediocrity that many LA restaurants try to pass as BBQ, but Eric and I don’t have that luxury. Smoke City Market made one of the most authentic attempts at Texas-style BBQ that I’ve found so far. || Recommendations: Pulled Pork, Pit Beans, and German Potato Salad.

Crying Tiger Pork at Jitlada

Bars & Pubs

  • Golden Road Pub — The home of Golden Road Brewery, the Golden Road Pub is a local hot spot. Eric and I stopped visiting for a long time when the brewery first became popular because the crowds were far too intense. We stopped by a few times this summer to grab some of their yummy bar-style food and refreshing brews. || Recommendations: Rosemary Roasted Turkey Melt, Southwest Vegan Burger, and Golden Road Hefeweizen.
  • The Lost Knight Pub — “A very British pub,” according to their website, but a modernized version of any British pub I’ve visited. We discovered The Lost Knight through dineLA’s Restaurant Week earlier this year. Excellent food and service, and the most savory fish and chips I’ve eaten this side of the pond. || Recommendations: Duck Pate & Toast and Fish & Chips.
  • The Morrison Pub — I’ve yet to write a full post about The Morrison, which is surprising, considering it’s generally my first choice when going out for dinner and drinks. Their menu selections are top-notch, the beer selection is impressive, the mood is fun and hip, and the service is absolutely outstanding. Plus, they make a cocktail called “The Unicorn” — can’t beat that. || Recommendations: Bacon Bourbonator, Atwater Veggie, and The Unicorn.
  • Tam O’Shanter — I fell in love with Tam O’Shanter the moment I laid eyes on it. The building appears to have been transplanted from the United Kingdom itself, complete with a red phone booth out front. Then I learned that this restaurant was a favorite of Walt Disney’s, making it all the more magical. Every time I eat here, I feel like I’m in another world. || Recommendations: Pan Seared Scottish Salmon, Fish & Chips, and the Nightly Ale & Sandwich Bar.

Beer Flights at The Morrison

Desserts

  • Churro Borough — A scoop of homemade small-batch ice cream sandwiched between two fresh, crispy churro disks. Need I say more? Many of the hip new food spots that pop up in LA are overrated, but Churro Borough delivers. It’s desserts are high-quality, satisfying, and delicious. || Recommendations: Brown Butter Cookie Sorbet, Horchata Sherbert, and “The Original” Churro Ice Cream Sandwich.
  • Sprinkles Cupcakes — The Glendale location of Los Angeles’ quintessential cupcake shop is my go-to for satisfying sweets cravings. Complete with a variety of cupcake flavors, cookies, ice cream, and a 24-hour cupcake ATM, I can’t say no to a visit to Sprinkles. || Recommendations: Salty Caramel Sprinkles Sundae with Dark Chocolate Ice Cream, Red Velvet Cupcake, and Peanut Butter Pretzel Chip Cookie.

Of course, this is but a mere sample of the outstanding flavors Los Angeles has to offer. I’m always on the lookout for new eateries, and I’m planning to share more of these round-ups here on the blog in the future. I Am Hungry: Vegan Dining at Café Gratitude

I Am Hungry: Vegan Dining at Café Gratitude

Café Gratitude is a popular vegan restaurant on Larchmont Boulevard in Los Angeles. Like the name implies, the restaurant encourages expressions of gratitude in everyday life. Their food is healthy, filling, and supportive of local farmers and sustainable agriculture, as well as delicious. Each item on the menu is named for an affirmation. I am Extraordinary is a vegan BLT. I am Bountiful is a quinoa pasta. I am Hearty: a raw Italian pizza. Everything is plant-based and 100% organic.

Besides an ample food selection, Café Gratitude serves an array of juices, smoothies, coffees, tonics, teas, and the ambiguous “wellness elixir”. They offer a morning breakfast and a collection of dinner specials. There is an impressive dessert menu (that you’d never believe was vegan!) and even a weekday happy hour from 3 to 6pm.

The service is friendly and thorough, albeit a bit unusual. A distinctly free-spirited atmosphere thrives in this eatery. Our waitress took our orders, then encouraged us to ponder the question of the day: What makes you happy? Easy: Food. Oh, and spending time with my husband, who “doesn’t buy in to that self-affirmation crap,” and was “just there to eat.”

I love that my husband appreciates food as much as I do.

My favorite dish is I am Humble, an indian curry bowl containing red lentils, spinach, roasted yams, mint chutney, and tomato jam on a bed of quinoa and brown rice. You have the choice of quinoa or brown rice as the base for this dish, but you can request a half and half mix, which I recommend. The brown rice is too heavy by itself, while quinoa alone is a bit sparse; I find that a mix of both provides the right balance. This meal is mushy, but is one of the tastiest mushes I’ve ever eaten. If you want to make it even mushier, add some avocado. It’s perfect.

I’ve eaten at Café Gratitude several times (it’s a favorite of one of the editors I work for), so there are many other dishes I recommend. I am Mucho is a zesty vegan taco salad, and is a good choice if you’re in the mood for something with a bit of a kick. I am Happy, a tasty mediterranean-style falafel wrap, is also highly satisfying. I am Fortified, a sautéed vegetable bowl filled with seasonal vegetables over rice and quinoa, is enjoyable, though not as filling as some of the other dishes.

The only item that I would not recommend is the veggie burger, I am Magical. It fell apart as soon as I picked it up, and was not as flavorful as I’d hoped. Fortunately, though, everything else that I’ve tried has been more than satisfying!

Next time you’re in the Larchmont area, give Café Gratitude a try. Because of its proximity to Paramount Studios, you may even see a celebrity or two!

Fred 62: A Modern Twist on the Classic Diner

Fred 62: A Modern Twist on the Classic Diner

Want to grab dinner at 3am? Maybe you’re craving scrambled eggs in the afternoon? Or do you just want a milkshake for breakfast? No matter what your outlandish desire may be, Fred 62 can help.

A classic diner with a modern twist, Fred 62 is one of Los Angeles’ few 24-hour restaurants. Unlike our other US big-city counterparts, finding food past 10pm on a weeknight in LA can be exceedingly tricky. After an evening movie or a late night at work, Fred 62 is where I turn.

The first thing you’ll notice about Fred’s menu is the vast array of breakfast options, available any time of day. Choices range from traditional eggs and pancakes to southwest inspired chilaquiles, from breakfast sandwiches to waffles covered in ice cream. If none of these appeal to you, why not build your own from the impressive selection of side dishes in the à la carte section?

Maybe breakfast isn’t your thing. In that case, you can continue to Fred 62’s lunch and dinner fare: salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, and lots of unique and tasty specials. One of our favorite aspects of the dinner menu are Fred’s TV dinners; namely The Lisa Simpson, a vegetarian tofu scramble over couscous and drenched in Moroccan tomato sauce. It’s healthy but so delicious. Which brings me to another reason to love Fred 62: tons of vegetarian and vegan options. Here, you can be as healthy or unhealthy as you want to be.

I don’t want to leave out the most important part of a balanced meal: dessert! Fred 62 has some seriously great desserts. Brownie sundaes, homemade pop tarts, root beer floats, milkshakes and malts — and that’s just naming a few. Be sure to leave room because you will not regret it.

Fred 62 has undergone several changes since we first began frequenting the restaurant back in 2009, and it keeps getting better and better. They’ve recently redone the interior to make the place roomier and brighter. They’re frequently adding new items to the menu and updating old favorites, so you’re likely to get new options each visit.

There’s also a lot of weird art on the walls. The bathroom used to be painted bright pink with strange, creepy dolls looking down at you from the rafters. You no longer have to pee in fear as this was also remodeled.

This restaurant is a lot of fun, with a friendly staff and delicious food. I would mainly recommend them for breakfast any time of day, or dessert, but they have good stuff for any time of day. Next time you’re in Los Feliz, be sure to check out Fred 62!

Deluca’s Italian Deli

Deluca’s Italian Deli

The Americana at Brand in Glendale is well-known for its upscale shopping and fine dining destinations. Occasionally, after a long morning of shopping, my husband and I want a simple, light meal, and that’s when we stop by Deluca’s Italian Deli. Nestled between Trattoria Amici and Sugarfina, this is the perfect spot for a quick lunch.

Deluca’s offers a wide selection of hot and cold sandwiches, deli salads, and a number of hot items like turkey lasagne, traditional Italian meatballs, and grilled salmon. Their menu suggests a number of daily specials as well. Eric and I usually opt for a panini sandwich each, plus a few deli salad side dishes to share if we’re extra hungry. The sandwiches pictured below are the turkey caprese sandwich with olive tapenade (one of my personal favorites) and the strawberry, spinach, and turkey panini.

In addition to the restaurant aspect, Deluca’s is also a marketplace. They offer a huge variety of Italian chocolates, candies, crackers, cookies, wines, and more for purchase. The displays cover nearly every inch of the shop’s walls, stretching from floor to ceiling. As you sit and wait for your food to arrive, it’s difficult not to be tempted to buy everything in sight!

I highly recommend Deluca’s Italian Deli on your next shopping excursion to Glendale. It’s a perfect alternative to the more expensive sit-down restaurants throughout the Americana.
