Witbier (Dutch for “white beer”) is a variety of wheat beer most commonly flavored with coriander and orange peel. The style originated in Belgium, but is now brewed throughout the world. Wheat proteins and yeast suspended in these beers create a hazy, light golden hue. It is this pale color that inspired the beer’s name.
Crisp, smooth, and light, witbier is one of the most refreshing beer styles. A slight tartness is usually present from the copious quantity of wheat, but it does not overwhelm. Rather, it enhances the near-perfect flavor. It’s no wonder I love this style!
Some of the most well-known modern Witbiers (and personal favorites of mine) include Blue Moon and Hoegaarden. This post won’t be about these beers because you’ve more than likely already experienced one or both. I can guarantee, however, that if you like these popular styles, you’ll enjoy the beers I’m sharing today.
I selected this beer for two important reasons. One: it is a witbier, and therefore falls into this week’s category. Two: it has a robot on the label. This is not just any robot, either. I mean, look at him: he is classy, charming, and suave. Can I go back and make the robot my number one reason for selecting this beer? Because I think I would have bought it regardless of it being a witbier.
Note to all breweries: if you want me to buy your beer, put a fancy robot on it.
The flavor itself is exceptionally light — much lighter even than most traditional witbiers. Rather than brewing with the traditional coriander and orange peel, Don Perfecto is instead spiced with cinnamon and vanilla. As a result, the traditional tartness is replaced by a subtle sweetness. It’s good, but in my opinion is a little too light. It practically resembles water more than it does beer.
Einstök‘s White Ale is much more of what I except from a modern witbier. It’s crisp and refreshing, light but full of flavor, dry and sweetly tart. It has many similarities to Blue Moon, though perhaps the citrus flavors are a bit more subdued. Overall, I found this beer easy to drink and highly enjoyable. I would definitely buy it again!
