Australian DJ dies suddenly in Paris while en route to Eurovision in Liverpool
Australian DJ Ian Bell has sadly passed away in Paris while en route to the Eurovision Song Concert in the UK with his family.
Ian, 60, suffered a heart attack on 2 May in the French capital, which was the first stop on his trip with his family that was said to also include a stop off in Liverpool to attend Eurovision 2023, according to the Advertiser.
The DJ, who was also a music writer, photographer and record store owner, is survived by his wife Jordan, the couple's daughter Ruby and his sisters Susan and Janet, as reported by Daily Mail Australia.
He began his music career back in the 1980s, when he would regularly DJ at clubs including Limbo in the Adelaide West End.
He also played at Heaven and his own Pop! night on Gouger St in the 1990s, going on to develop into a pop culture expert.
Ian's writing, including interviews and reviews, and photographs were featured in several publications and websites over the years. He was also a regular performer at Big Day Out festival – an annual music festival held across five Australian cities.
He is remembered as a "lovely and kind" man, and was often snapped alongside famous faces including Rita Ora and Spice Girls star Mel C.
Fellow writer Andrew P Street described Ian as one of the "loveliest" and "most endlessly enthusiastic" people he'd ever known.
In a tribute to the late DJ, Andrew penned: "So many friendships, so many relationships, began on the sticky floors of Bang! and Pop! and Ian's many other club nights."
Meanwhile nightclub owner Driller Jet Armstrong branded Ian a "true pioneer" in a touching Facebook tribute. He also said: "Tried and trusted, from the Toucan club to Sugar and everything in between."
Former EMI and Sony records worker Deb Edwards said she was "blessed" to have worked with Ian and also wrote that there would "only ever be one Ian Bell".
"Blessed was I to have him amongst my DJ meetings … He was always keen as beans to hear and see new music," Deb posted on social media.
