Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon have experience in self-quarantine. After all, their real-life relationship—which was the basis for the hit 2017 comedy The Big Sick—centered on the discovery of Gordon’s autoimmune illness. Now, with everyone in their own version of social distancing and self-quarantine due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the pair have started a new podcast called Staying In with Emily and Kumail, the proceeds of which will go to charities helping health care, restaurant workers, and sick children.
“We are doing a podcast for charity to benefit those who are suffering from this current weird quarantine moment,” Nanjiani wrote in his Instagram caption announcing the podcast, adding that the show would include “Movie, tv, video game recs, tips on avoiding cabin fever, tips on self-quarantining.”
In Gordon’s own post, she made clear what the podcast would be about. “We won’t have news about the pandemic, but what we can offer is experience in self-quarantining (because of my condition), experience in working from home, and experience consuming media,” she wrote in her caption.
The charities that proceeds of the podcast will support, according to Gordon’s Instagram, are The Center For Disaster Philanthropy, The Restaurant Workers’Community Foundation, and Feeding America.

Welp, it’s happened. @kumailn and I have started a limited series podcast to help you cope with life indoors during these truly unprecedented times- it's called Staying In with Emily and Kumail. And the best part? All proceeds are going to charity. Listen and get into those ads, because revenue from this podcast will go to @funds4disaster @RWCFNYC @FeedingAmerica who are working to support health care, restaurant workers, and hungry children. We won't have news about the pandemic, but what we can offer is experience in self-quarantining (because of my condition), experience in working from home, and experience consuming media. Go listen, stay indoors, and wash those hands! Link in bio! UPDATE: the podcast is available anywhere podcasts are available.
Nanjiani is no novice in podcasting; he used to host The X-Files Files, a podcast dedicated to diving very, very deep into the classic ’90s-’00s sci-fi series The X-Files. The first episode of Staying In with Emily and Kumail is available now, and you can listen below:
