Joe Biden may profit from coronavirus keeping rich Dem donors Stateside

Coronavirus has a silver lining for one man — Joe Biden is ready to cash in with a host of Hamptons fund-raisers because the 1 percent won’t be traveling abroad over spring break and the summer.

With the fast-moving coronavirus outbreak, many wealthy Democratic donors are likely to be spending more time at their East End homes in the next few months rather than decamping for their usual European destinations amid travel warnings.

A source said of any political fund-raisers, “They figure more people will be out East, because they expect cancellations to Europe by the jet set, due to the virus.”

The source said that so far, Biden’s camp has already been in touch with philanthropist, tech entrepreneur and LGBT activist David Bohnett about a Memorial Day weekend event. Bohnett has been a big Biden supporter dating back to 2012 — when Biden made a statement in favor of same-sex marriage.

The Biden campaign, the source added, is also talking to billionaire short-seller Jim Chanos, who hosted a Biden event at his home in June, which Gov. Andrew Cuomo attended.

Another Democratic source said Biden — a regular visitor to the Hamptons — will clean up out East because his rival for the nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders, has much of his fund-raising focus on grass-roots organizations and small donations from individuals.

The source said, “Biden is rolling up his sleeves to sweep the Hamptons for campaign cash. He’s in a unique position because there is no way Sanders would step a foot out here.”

Southampton has become a favorite vacation spot for Biden in recent years, while President Donald Trump has some Hamptons backers too — most notably developer and builder Joe Farrell, who hosted a Trump event at his famed 17,000-square-foot Sandcastle estate in Bridgehampton.
