Kelly Marie Tran on quitting social media: best thing I ever did

Kelly Marie Tran did an interview with Entertainment Tonight to promote her role on Monsterland on Hulu. The more I hear about this show the more I want to see it! Here’s a link to the trailer. It looks good and it’s giving me X-Files vibes. Kelly quit social media in the summer of 2017 when she was being harassed by racist Star Wars fans mad at her for being a woman of color on The Last Jedi. Kelly’s character, Rose, got less than a minute and a half of screen time in the next film, The Rise of Skywalker, something filmmakers blamed on losing Carrie Fischer and having to edit around Leia’s character. Kelly is doing well and has the starring role in the upcoming animated feature, Raya and the Last Dragon. Kelly told ET’s Ash Crossan that it was unreal to be playing a Disney princess and that she credits that to her team.

On her Monsterland character’s morality being ambiguous
What makes a good person? What makes a bad person? A lot of times there’s not an easy answer. It’s not just ‘this person is a bad person because they did this one thing.’ A lot of times we’re not actually aware of the context in which this person did this act. There’s all of these other factors not being considered.

On people getting called out online
It’s hard and we do want to call people out when something’s problematic. At the same time, do they not get to exist in the world anymore? I don’t think there is one right answer. It’s a nuanced case by case thing.

On quitting social media
I think that it’s a different thing for everyone. People should do what they think is right for them. I also think that it was the best thing I ever did. People are still shocked by it sometimes. I just did what was best for me. Why is that so shocking? I feel great about it.

On how it feels to be a Disney princess
I don’t understand why or how I got to be involved in these things. I’ve always wanted to tell stories but I feel like the things I’ve been able to do thus far say a lot more about the people around me than me. I’m working with all these incredible people. I have not grasped that yet, it feels very unreal.

Kelly also showed a photo of her mantle all set up for Halloween and I thought that was so cool. I set up my Halloween decorations this weekend and am so happy with the way my house looks now. As for her quitting Instagram, I can’t imagine being a famous woman on Instagram or Twitter. Sometimes I think about what Brie Larson went through for trying to be a decent ally in the lead-up to Captain Marvel. It must be so much worse for women of color. Honestly I did not see The Rise of Skywalker, but I loved seeing Kelly in The Last Jedi and was hoping for great things from her. We’ll see that, but just in a different venue.
