Samantha Jacobson has spent almost 14 years stanning Taylor Swift. As one of the pop star's biggest fans, 24-year-old Jacobson has seen her in concert nearly 30 times, went to her fans-only "Reputation" album release party in 2017, and got pizza and hung out with Swift after her worldwide "1989" album announcement.
She and Swift have also followed each other on Tumblr, the singer's favorite social media platform to connect with fans since 2014. When Jacobson lost her job as a Disney World cocktail sever due to the coronavirus quarantine in Florida, she posted about the financial stress on Tumblr. Then she got a Twitter DM from a familiar face.
"I thought it was fake," Jacobson told Insider. "I saw the notification and I probably clicked her profile picture like 15, 20 times to make sure it was her legitimate profile. I was in shock. I didn't know what to reply, how to reply, who to call, if I should cry, if I should scream, I was absolutely speechless."
Swift sent Jacobson $3,000 to help cover expenses during the quarantine, and the gift was "life-changing." Jacobson says she'll be able to go back to her job after the 30-day mandate (which could be extended) lifts on bars and nightclubs in Florida, but in the meantime, Swift's donation will help her cover rent and bills for March and April.
"It's amazing. It's really going to keep me afloat," Jacobson said. "I'm still going to try and find a temporary job in the meantime, but this is really going to help me."

Swift sent at least four other fans $3,000 each, too. All of them had initially posted about their quarantine struggles to tumblr, and they all then posted the evidence of the DM conversations on Twitter. One fan wrote on Tumblr that her new job was postponed for six months due to the coronavirus and that she had lost her retail job in the meantime.
In Swift's DM to her, the artist wrote "I'm so sorry things are tough right now and I'd like to gift you $3000 to help to ease that strain. Can you please send the email address for your PayPal account? Love, Taylor."
One fan wrote that Swift's $3,000 gift "single-handedly saved" her ability to keep living in New York City.
"I made a post on tumblr about how i was scared i wouldn't be able to stay living NYC because of what corona has done to the music industry [sic]," the fan wrote on Twitter. "I cannot even believe my eyes right now."
Along with the joy of receiving Swift's gift has come some bitterness, too. Jacobson has clashed with a few other Swift fans who have made fun of her and her response to the surprise on Twitter, but she's not letting it get to her.
"I know there are a lot of people out there who think it's fake and think they deserved it or whatever. I think with anything this big and anyone as globally known as her, negativity is gonna show," she told Insider. "There's always going to be people who bring you down, but at the end of the day I know that Taylor really loves me and I love her and she reached out because she thought I deserved it."
Representatives for Swift didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
