Beauty guru Jeffree Star has made a name for himself over the past decade. His makeup empire, Jeffree Star Cosmetics, has become one of the most lucrative brands in the business, making his net worth one of the highest in the industry.
Jeffree Star started out as a musician
While Star is known to most people now as a makeup maven, that wasn’t always his passion. He actually rose to recognition on MySpace as a musician, and self-released his album Beauty Killer in 2009. The single “Lollipop Luxury” was a hit for both Star and the up-and-coming rapper featured on it: Nicki Minaj.
Star signed to Akon‘s record label Konvict Muzik in 2010 and was described by the R&B singer as “the next Lady Gaga.” However, tensions between the two boiled over and Star became frustrated with his contract and with the music industry in general.
He left the music industry in 2013, and revealed in 2020 that he didn’t want to but was basically forced to. He was almost bankrupt and his music career was effectively dead in the water, and he used whatever savings he had left to launch his own cosmetics brand.
Jeffree Star became a successful makeup mogul
Jeffree Star Cosmetics was a hit almost right off the bat. Star launched JSC in 2014 with just three liquid lipsticks; they’ve since become one of the brand’s signature products, now boasting over 100 shades. All products sold by JSC are vegan and cruelty-free.
Two years later, JSC launched the first of several successful eyeshadow palettes, this one named after Star’s album Beauty Killer. Several other palettes have since been released, including Blood Sugar, Thirsty, Blue Blood, Blood Money, and more.
Star even collaborated with fellow controversial YouTuber Shane Dawson for the Jawbreaker collection, which was the company’s biggest release at the time.
Jeffree Star’s net worth may surprise some people
Despite being sold almost entirely online, Jeffree Star Cosmetics is an extremely lucrative brand, and the dedication from fans continues to drive its success today. As a result, Star has accumulated lots of wealth, and turned around from being almost bankrupt in just a few years.
According to Forbes, the brand rakes in about $100 million each year. Star himself prefers to keep quiet about his net worth on his YouTube channel, but as evidenced by his luxurious house, several foreign sports cars, and his recent purchase of land in Wyoming, Star has done quite well for himself.
Star has also invested his money in several other businesses besides makeup, including the cannabis industry.
As of January 2021, Star’s personal net worth is estimated to be between $200 and $250 million. Considering his net worth in 2019 was purported to be around $50 million, it goes without saying that Star has learned how to turn money into more money.
