THE BEST storage beds don’t look like they’re hiding oodles of space beneath the mattress.
They just look like a stylish bed that you want to sink in to after a long day.
But considering that a bed is probably one of the largest items of furniture you’ll have in your home – especially if you go for a king or super-king one – it makes sense to put all that space to good use.
It’ll free up space in your bedroom and other rooms as you’ll need less storage and, therefore, fewer pieces of furniture for all your bits and bobs.
When shopping for a storage bed, you’ll find that most of them are called ‘divan’ beds. This simply means the bed is made up of two parts: a specially designed divan base and a matching mattress.
The divan base is constructed from a wooden frame covered in fabric and is usually on castors so it can be moved about easily. Almost all divan beds feature built-in storage.
This can take the form of drawers that pull out of the sides or the bottom of the bed, while some lift up (known as ottoman beds) to reveal storage space beneath the mattress.
Ottoman beds generally have more storage space than those with drawers, as there is no need for the bulky frames that drawers have to be housed in. So go for this type if it’s maximum room you’re after.
The other option you have are daybeds with storage. These look like a bench seat with drawers in the base when not in use, making them perfect for a spare room, but pull out and transform into a double bed for when you have guests staying.
You probably wouldn’t want a daybed as your permanent, everyday bed, though they can be handy for kids’ rooms if you’re short on space. Otherwise, we’d say this type of storage bed is best left for occasional use in a spare bedroom.
