Coronavirus mystery as nine-month-old boy becomes second baby in UK to catch it

A mum has spoken of her shock after her young son became what is thought to be the second baby to contract killer coronavirus in the UK.

Cassian Coates had a fever and cold for a number of days so concerned parents Myroslava and Callum took him to hospital.

They were stunned to be told that he had got coronavirus – despite neither of them having shown any symptoms.

The couple, who are now self-isolating at home in Manchester, are now treating Cassian with Calpol as if he had a cold.

Mrs Coates, told Sky News : "When we got there, we had to go through special measures and ring a certain number for them to let us in. The waiting room actually had a big sign up saying 'suspected case'.

"Me and my husband were like 'oh my God', then a nurse walked past and said 'yeah, that's you guys'.

"We went in, then the doctor came in with a mask on, did some basic checks, temperature, checked his ears and said 'yeah, it's the coronavirus strand'.

All the couple could do was laugh, such was shock, as they couldn't believe their baby had caught the infectious disease.

Mrs Coates added: "We wondered where he caught it because my husband and I are both fine.

"I did panic but I cannot express how fantastic and reassuring our GP was. They said that with children this age they are diagnosing by symptoms.

"We were told to go home to self-isolate for two weeks and keep giving him Calpol as if it was a cold."

The mother-of-one added that she did not think the guidelines had been clear enough, and that after they posted the news of Cassian's positive test on social media they had been inundated with questions from other parents.

She added: "There are peaks and troughs but thankfully Cassian is over the worst of it.''

Cassian's diagnosis comes after a anewborn baby in  London  became the world's youngest  coronavirus  patient last week but he is now said to be "out of danger and recovering''.

The unnamed mother of the child was rushed to hospital with suspected pneumonia and her positive result was only known after the birth.

Yesterday the coronavirus death toll in the UK has surged to 71 people after 14 people died over the past day.

The patients were aged between 93 and 45 and all had underlying health conditions.

Earlier today it was announced that the coronavirus case total soared to 1,950  after 407 more patients tested positive in the biggest day-on-day increase yet.

It emerged that the 45-year-old, thought to be Britain's youngest coronavirus victim, was Craig Ruston, from Kettering, Northants, who was already suffering from Motor Neurone Disease.
