MAURICIO POCHETTINO is the outright favourite to be appointed Manchester United manager before the beginning of next season.

That's according to bookmakers Betfair, who've shortened his odds to 6/4 after a frenetic week in the betting market.

Chelsea's Thomas Tuchel and Tottenham chief Antonio Conte are also in contention for the position at Old Trafford next season.

Pochettino's future is under the microscope after their Champions League collapse.

PSG arrived at the Bernabeu with a one-goal advantage and took the lead on the night through Kylian MBappe but crumbled and lost 3-1 after a hat-trick from Karim Benzema.

Reports had claimed that Pochettino's stay in Paris was largely resting on their Champions League run.

And PSG chief Leonardo did little to back his manager beyond the summer.

He said: "The objective is to win the Champions League, and until half time we were fine. We have to look to improve this team.

"Mauricio Pochettino is still part of the project for this season. It's not the time to think about that."

The Argentine was also tight-lipped about his future.

He added: "The present is all I can deal with. It’s simply impossible to discuss about it now, it’s not the right moment."

The Red Devils are optimistic of making a long-term appointment ahead of the 2022-23 campaign and Pochettino is still the favourite.

The 50-year-old has the support of Sir Alex Ferguson and could become a free agent if PSG decide to give him his marching orders.

Poch is eager to return to England having lived in a Paris hotel for the last 14 months, while his family remained in London.

Erik ten Hag, 52, is a close second at 11/4 although the Dutchman has repeatedly refused to be drawn in on speculation.

Tuchel has flown into contention at 7/2 given the events unfolding at Stamford Bridge.

And Jamie Carragher has urged United to capitalise.

He told The Telegraph: "Manchester United have been presented with the ideal opportunity to recruit the manager who should be their number one target: Thomas Tuchel.

"United can offer him the security and backing every top coach craves. Yes, it will seem a predatory move – taking advantage of Chelsea’s crisis – but from United and Tuchel’s perspective the more you consider it, the more of a no-brainer it is."

Conte has drifted a fraction to 10/1, while Ralf Rangnick is available at 16/1, ahead of 20/1 duo Diego Simeone and Simone Inzaghi.
