Rare 1979 Wayne Gretzky Rookie Card Auctions for Record $3.75 Million USD

Wayne Gretzky is highly regarded as one of hockey’s greats even after his retirement from the NHL.

Heritage Auctions recently sold a rare 1979, Gem Mint 10 condition Wayne Gretzky rookie card for $3.75 million USD, which now holds the record for the most expensive hockey card ever. The card is expected to be only one of two known 1979 O-Pee-Chee Gretzky rookie cards with a perfect grading. The previous record was only set five months ago, where Heritage also sold the other gem-mint Canadian version of Gretzky’s Edmonton Oilers rookie card for $1.29 million USD. The same card was sold for $94,000 USD in 2011, prior to fetching $465,000 USD in 2016.

It is not surprising that the price of the hockey great’s card continues to soar to exorbitant prices. The now 60-year-old retired, four-time Stanley Cup champion ranks first in goals with 894 and assists with 1,963. Gretzky, known as “The Great One” was a pillar for the sport, and has recently become one of the Holy Grails in sports cards memorabilia.
