Coronation Street fans were left devastated when Oliver Battersby’s (played by Emmanuel and Jeremiah Cheetham) diagnosis was revealed as Mitochondrial disorder following several seizures which saw him hospitalised. His parents Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) and Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) are coming to terms with this news and learning everything they can in a bid to ensure their son has a happy and healthy future. Naturally, Leanne is determined to put Oliver first, but in doing so, her marriage could be under threat.
In scenes airing this week, Steve and Leanne will sit down with the medical expert to discuss the extent of Oliver’s illness.
Doctors initially said Oliver was suffering from a febrile convulsion, but further tests will reveal the young child was suffering from a rare disorder.
But what damage will this do to the little boy’s body?
The ITV soap confirmed the extent to which Oliver’s health could deteriorate; a person with Mitochondrial disorder could experience seizures, fatigue, vision and hearing loss, cognitive disabilities, respiratory problems or poor growth.

Any of the body’s organs and systems can be affected including the brain, heart, lungs, gut, liver and skin.
This is something Leanne and Simon are going to face up to because the doctor will warn it’s too soon to be sure, but Oliver may have suffered brain damage after his latest seizure.
Leanne will refuse to believe it, adamant Oliver will make a full recovery but Steve is more realistic.
Determined to be Oliver’s main care provider, Leanne is going to do everything she can to try and protect him and nurture him, but in doing so she will begin to neglect her marriage.
In upcoming scenes, Leanne is going to try and do everything herself, refusing help from anyone.
Fans of Coronation Street will see Leanne arrive home with Oliver next week, and Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) will be by her side.
But when her husband offers his assistance, Leanne snaps and tells Nick she can cope.
While he understands Leanne’s need to be there for her son, Nick feels pushed away.
This could be the start of something much bigger between Nick and Leanne.
The pair have had a lot of history, they began dating in late 1997 and as teenagers they ran away and got married a year later.

After several tumultuous situations, Nick (formerly played by Adam Rickitt) moved to Canada alone in 1999 and returned in 2002 when he started dating Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) and together they left for Canada.
But when she returned, Nick followed her back to Weatherfield, but their relationship was thrown into chaos when Leanne made a comeback in 2004.
When Nick (Ben Price) returned in 2009, Leanne was in a relationship with Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne), but this didn’t stop them going into business together.
In 2010, they started an affair, but the tram crash saw Leanne marry Peter on his deathbed – only for him to survive.
When a marriage blessing was planned a year later, Leanne and Nick’s affair was exposed and Peter demanded a divorce.
The following year, Nick and Leanne planned a Christmas Day wedding, but it was called off when Leanne’s secret conversation with Peter was revealed.
After sleeping with brother David Platt’s (Jack P. Shepherd) wife Kylie (Paula Lane), Leanne planned to leave but Nick begged her to stay and they eventually married in January 2013.
Paternity drama caused them to split and Leanne started dating Kal Nazir (Jimi Mistry) who died, while Nick married Carla Connor (Alison King).
But that marriage didn’t work after she slept with Robert Preston (Tristan Gemmill), and Leanne was there to help Nick.
After he confessed his love, she responded by having a one-night stand with Steve in June 2016, which saw her fall pregnant with Oliver.
- Gail Platt exit: Will Gail Platt leave Coronation Street?
In an attempt to sort out the drama, Nick, Steve, Peter, Leanne and Toyah Battersby went to the beach but Nick ended up getting stuck in the quicksand.
Although he was rescued, Nick decided Leanne deserved better and left, but when Leanne was involved in a car crash in October 2018, Nick was listed as her emergency contact and turned up at the hospital.
He stayed by her bedside and eventually won her back, but it seems their relationship is so rocky, Oliver’s illness could throw them apart once again.
Feeling as if Leanne doesn’t need him anymore, will Nick decide to step away and allow Leanne to care for Oliver by herself?
Coronation Street airs weekdays at Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7.30pm on ITV.
