Corrie bosses wheel out big-name stars to boost Covid-clobbered studio tours

Coronation Street bosses are wheeling out big-name stars to boost their Covid-clobbered studio tours.

Street bosses have signed up a host of their top stars to meet fans at the £40-a-head visits to their new studios.

Peter Barlow star Chris Gascoyne was the first actor to meet fans at the weekend.

Visitors were delighted by the new move and one person said on TripAdvisor: “Everything was perfect. Enjoyed by myself my partner and my partner’s mum.

“Absolute bonus that one of the main characters from the show showed up, Pete Barlow.”

Another wrote: “What a fantastic day the sun shone on weatherfield today our tour was at 2:45 pm 16th July and it was well organised.

“We were excited to see who we got for the star and we weren’t disappointed PETER BARLOW fantastic guy and we got our photo with him would recommend the star tour don’t know how long they’re doing that for and it’s a different star each time.”

And Chris, who has played Ken Barlow's son for 22 years, was greeted with delighted cheers and claps and cries of 'Peter.'

"You were the one we wanted," called out one fan to the 54-year-old actor. "Aw that's nice," he thanked them. "I was just going to say I'm sorry Ken Barlow couldn't be here," he joked.

Speaking of his joy at landing the role of former sailor and bookmaker Peter told fans: "All my family where I grew up watched Coronation Street. When I was at drama school I couldn't ring my mother between 7.30pm and 8pm."

He added: "I never in a million year dreamed I would be on such an iconic show let alone playing Ken Barlow's son. Isn't life strange?"

The star tour runs on selected days during the summer. A visit without a star meet and greet is £28.

ITV lost a fortune in revenue due to the tours being closed for more than two years after the Covid pandemic struck.

The studios in Salford opened up for tours in 2018 after the closure of the visitor attraction at the old Quay Street set in Manchester city centre.

Guests can walk down the famous cobbles and see landmarks including the Rovers Return Inn, The Kabin and Roy’s Rolls, and the recent Victoria Street expansion, including new shops, a police station, and the Weatherfield North tram station.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV at 8pm
