Oh Imran, you’ve been a naughty boy! Coronation Street has confirmed that Imran Habeeb has slept with Abi Franklin (Sally Carman) on the night of the trial verdict.
But actor Charlie de Melo has insisted that this was not born of comfort or lust – but two desperately sad individuals who found themselves in a dark place.
That said, Charlie is not very forgiving of his alter ego.
He told Metro.co.uk: ‘They were both in the worst possible headspace possibly of all time. I was told well in advance but the contexts of it all, I didn’t know so I was really shocked! It meant I got to work more with Sally Carman – having watched her work, particularly over the last year, I have had my head in my hands like: “Whaaat!? This is extraordinary!”
‘She is well beyond me so even to be around someone that good – hopefully some of that will rub off on me! She is insanely good!’
So what does this mean for the future? Charlie warned of major trouble ahead, which we should have expected.
He revealed: ‘I actually don’t know a lot about what is going to come of it but from what has been shot, I’m really pleased with the dynamic of it all.
‘Certain people know things and certain people don’t, they both have stuff hanging over their heads and there are very terse and tense scenes, knowing that at any moment, the other could just explode the revelation. It’s an ongoing threat. It’s really fun to get to grips with – it’s another performance in a performance.’
So could Imran lose favour with fans? It’s inevitable really…
Charlie smiled: ‘I guess he will be! It’s a really lovely thing about the viewers; it requires a lot of commitment and love to watch three hours of the show a week. They’ve adopted you into their homes so if the character then betrays their trust, then it can create quite an interesting response!
‘I hope there is some backlash because it shows people care – I’ll be the first to say he’s been an arse! I think the days of being hit by old ladies with umbrellas are gone but I’ll be keeping my mask on for the forseeable just in case!’
