NBC’s hit period comedy The Goldbergs returned to screens in September with their ninth season. Although ratings appeared to be going well, the series will face a major mid-season delay and go off air in a lengthy scheduling shake-up.

The Goldbergs is a popular American sitcom which transports viewers back to the ’80s to give viewers an insight into Adam Goldberg’s (played by Sean Giambrone) childhood.

As the youngest child, he retells his unconventional life with an overbearing mother, hot-tempered father, rebellious older sister, high-strung older brother and suave grandfather.

Using his parent’s camcorder, Adam started his film-making career by recording his eccentric suburban family, which captured tons of wild antics.

With viewers nine seasons in, the show will take a lengthy break for reasons unknown.

After episode nine titled ‘Tennis People’ aired on Wednesday, it was noted the network the series was missing from ABC’s TV listings.

Cartermatt.com reported: “There is no new episode next week, or the week after.”

Due to the unexpected break, it is unlikely The Goldbergs will return to regular scheduling before Christmas.

Thankfully the network confirmed the series would be returning on January Wednesday 5, alongside other comedies ABC had delayed.

The delay came as a surprise to fans while others took to Twitter to share their upset at the shake-up.

Salvador15 wrote: “I didn’t know this is the last episode of #TheGoldbergs of 2021 and there’s no Christmas episode.

“That was a fun episode. Now I’m sad. No more new episodes until Jan,” tweeted WVMAN_1974.

MermaidSailor shared: “That was great, can’t wait for the new eps in the new year!”

Season nine opened on an emotional note as the family were mourning the death of Albert “Pops” Solomon (George Segal).

The 87-year-old actor passed away in March after suffering complications with his bypass surgery.

The cast and crew had released a statement ahead of the show’s return: “On behalf of everyone at The Goldbergs, we are devastated at the loss of our dear friend, George.

“He was kind, sweet, beyond talented and funny. George was the true epitome of class and he touched all of our lives so deeply.”

It continued: “It was an honour and a privilege to have him as a colleague and friend all of these years. It is no surprise to any of us that knew him so well that he is a true national treasure.”

Elsewhere, season nine also saw the family planning Erica Goldberg’s (Hayley Orrantia) wedding.

Hayley hinted at a wedding episode during an interview with Hollywood Life: “I have a feeling closer to the end of the season, you might see the actual wedding.”

With the mid-season finale, fans can anticipate the wedding could potentially air at the start of the new year.

The Goldbergs returns to ABC on Wednesday, January 5.
