Young Sheldon fans will recognise many things throughout the series, with countless callbacks and references to The Big Bang Theory and beyond. The show follows Sheldon Cooper’s (played by Iain Armitage) childhood as he becomes the scientific marvel fans know him as from the original series. But where does the CBS show take place?

Where does Young Sheldon take place?

The Big Bang Theory fans will be familiar with where the original series took place – Pasadena.

Set in Los Angeles County, the show followed four friends living in an apartment building as they went through awkward and endearing adventures.

For fans that want more after the show came to an end, Young Sheldon is the perfect place, as it is a prequel exploring the origins of Sheldon himself.

However, the new series doesn’t take place in Pasadena, with the show going back to Sheldon’s hometown.

Keen fans will already know where that is, with adult Sheldon (Jim Parsons) referencing it on more than one occasion in the original series.

Young Sheldon takes viewers back to the late 1980s and early 1990s and sees Sheldon attending high school in the fictional town of Medford, Texas.

Despite The Big Bang Theory taking place in a real-life location, Young Sheldon invited viewers to a completely unique creation.

The series purposely references its time period on more than one occasion, showing viewers the exact date it is set in order to help tie it to the original series.

Jim Parsons also returns to narrate Young Sheldon, which in turn helps to connect the two shows together.

Speaking to TVLine, Parsons explained how Young Sheldon helped him to continue to explore the character, despite The Big Bang Theory ending.

“In fact, I’ve already done voiceovers [on Young Sheldon] from ages that are older than I ever got with Sheldon [on Big Bang Theory],” Parsons explained.

“He spoke of his children last season, and obviously we haven’t seen that yet. I will get to hear where [the writers’] imaginations take that character… that I never would’ve gotten to find out otherwise.”

This has given fans a hint at what to expect from Young Sheldon, with the show potentially exploring more about the character post the events of The Bing Bang Theory.

Season five of Young Sheldon is dropping on CBS on October 7, 2021, with plenty more in store for the character.

After the release of season three, it was revealed that CBS had renewed the series for an additional four seasons.

This would take the series up to season seven, but it could go beyond even that.

The Big Bang universe is still open to further expansion, with Kelly Kahl, CBS Entertainment President telling TVLine: “If they want to talk to us about it, we are here to listen,” referring to showrunner Chuck Lorre.

Plans for another spin-off fizzled out back in 2019 however when a creative enough idea failed to spark Lorre’s imagination.

Yet, Young Sheldon continues to be one of CBS’s most popular shows, showing the desire for more Sheldon Cooper content is there.

The plot details have not been revealed for season five, but season four ended with a hint towards Sheldon’s parents’ divorce.

This was a major event for Sheldon throughout The Big Bang Theory and would play a major role in Young Sheldon moving forward.

Young Sheldon is available to watch on CBS.
