Coronavirus – Wife's agony as her 'soul mate' husband, 59, becomes youngest UK coronavirus victim as death toll hits 35

THE wife of Britain's youngest coronavirus victim today told of her agony after he died from the bug aged 59.

Heartbroken Mary Matthews described husband Nick as her "soulmate" – as the UK death toll rose from 21 to 35 overnight.

Retired police officer Nick, who has underlying health issues, contracted the bug after going on holiday to Spain to celebrate his birthday.

Nick – who had underlying health issues – fell ill with Covid-19 symptoms soon after his return and lost his battle for life early on Saturday.

Devastated Mary, 55, wrote on Facebook: "Today at 3am I lost my life partner and soul mate, but most of all my best friend.

“Charlotte, Ben and I are beyond proud to have had such a big character in our lives.

“As a family, we are still currently in isolation until the coronavirus test results come back.


“I know some of you would like to visit, but please for you and your family's safety, stay away until we get the all clear.”

Pals described Nick as a "top bloke" and a "genuine, loving and kind person".

Meanwhile the number of coronavirus cases in the UK rose from 1,140 to 1,372 overnight.

Mary is trying to trace anyone who has been in contact with her husband in the past two weeks.

A spokesperson from NHS England confirmed Nick is the youngest victim as the further patients who died were aged between 59 and 94.

The number of cases rose from 60 to 94 in Wales and from 121 to 153 in Scotland today.

In Northern Ireland, the number of confirmed cases increased from 34 to 45.
