The Bullring shopping centre in Birmingham was evacuated this morning as a man armed with a machete was arrested.

A 28-year-old was detained on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

A bag left in the centre was initially thought to be suspicious, but found to contain toiletries, West Midlands Police said.

Staff were ordered to clear the showpiece city centre mall before 9am on Wednesday, June 24.

Workers were told to move away and onto New Street.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: ‘The Bullring was evacuated briefly this morning after a 28-year-old man, armed with a machete, was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

‘A bag left in the centre was initially thought to be suspicious, but found to contain toiletries.’

The shopping centre has since reopened as bosses thanked customers for their patience.
